There are various ways to assess pupils and both formative and summative assessments are carried out over the academic year. In Upper Primary and all of Secondary there are also end of topic assessments that may be in a test format. But for pupils in Year 3 and up, at the end of term3 they sit formal exams. Years 3 to 9 undertake SATs exams and Years 10 and 11 sit for their IGCSE exams.

Standard Assessment Tests: SATs
Years 3 to 9

What the SATs do is show us as teachers, what the pupils have learnt and retained during the year. It allows us to identify strengths and weaknesses of your child and of the class as a whole. We can also compare what progress your child has made from their last year, and how they compare to children of the same age in the UK.

Pupils cannot fail SATs. They just show what they can do and what they have leant. Pupils in Years 3, 4 and 5 undertake Optional SATs tests in Mathematics and English. Pupils in Year 6 take the formal, end of Key Stage 2 SATs in Mathematics, English and Science.

Pupils in Year 7 and 8 undertake Optional SATs tests in Mathematics and English and at the end of Year 9 complete the formal end of Key Stage 3 SATs in Mathematics, English and Science.

The Mathematics exams are broken down into a Mental Mathematics test and two written tests, one with a calculator allowed and one without.

The English exams are broken down into Reading and Writing tests, with a literacy based test at the end of Year 9 based on a novel covered in that year.

The Science exams are broken down into two writing papers.

Levels

The levels obtained by pupils are used in two ways;

  • To see if the pupil has made sufficient progress over the academic year. This should be about two sub levels i.e. a pupil on level 3C should be on at least level 3A, or a pupil on level 5A should progress to a 6B. This isn’t an exact science but it does give a benchmark for expected progress. Any anomalous results can then be used by the teacher in the future.
  • To compare your child’s ability to pupils of a similar age in the UK. Please see the table for comparison.

International General Certificate of Secondary Education: IGCSE
Years 10 and 11

IGCSE

Students in Key Stage 4 complete a two-year program leading to the award of the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE). This is an external examination administered by an examining board in the United Kingdom. Our pupils sit the Cambridge IGCSE which is the world’s most popular international curriculum for 14-16 year olds and is taught in over 125 countries worldwide. It is recognized by employees and universities throughout the world. For further information please visit the CIE website:
http://www.cie.org.uk/qualifications/academic/middlesec/igcse/overview

Who is IGCSE for?

The IGCSE is designed to be accessible to a wide range of abilities. Results are published as grades from A to G with high achieving students gaining an A*. Students at GIS sit the examinations in the third term of Year 11. To ensure that students are properly prepared for the examinations, students will be continually assessed during the course of their studies using the A to G scale of achievement.

Where do IGCSEs lead to?

The subjects available to students in Years 10 and 11 have been carefully selected with the intention of providing a broad and balanced curriculum that allows students to acquire a sound base from which they can progress to the International Baccalaureate or A Levels in Years 12 and 13.

The IB Diploma is an internationally recognised award which meets university placement criteria at many major universities throughout the world, including those in Europe, Australia and the United States.
