Having a good understanding of the English language plays an essential part of succeeding at GIS. We are therefore happy to offer English as an Additional Language (EAL) to all pupils throughout the school who require it.

Is EAL compulsory?
Yes, it is vital that pupils are proficient in English if they are to succeed at Garden International School, Bangkok. Therefore it is a school requirement for a pupil who is identified as needing EAL support to follow and successfully complete the program.
How much does EAL support cost?
EAL at GIS Bangkok is charged per term. Please ask at reception for up to date information regarding these fees.
How do we know a new pupil’s skill level? Pupils entering Year 3 or above take a written test. Pupils in Years 1 and 2 are assessed by their class teacher during their first week at GIS.
How long does each level take?
It depends. All pupils are assessed at the end of every term. Those who pass the assessment move to the next level. A realistic expectation is 2-3 terms per level.
How much support is given? 5 lessons per week, with a combination of one-to-one or small group support during the school day.
How big are the classes?
EAL groups usually have 2-5 students.
What level of English is required to enter IGCSE at Year 10?
An intermediate level of English is required for students wishing to enter Year 10. Therefore students in Year 9 who have not passed the P.E.T. (Preliminary English Test) assessment by the end of the school year, will be required to re-enroll in Year 9.
